Noah John Rondeau, Adirondack Hermit
by Maitland C. DeSormo
204 pages - Photos - Illus. - Paper
Although
the Adirondacks have had their share of hermits down through the ages, there were two who
were outstanding; Adirondack French Louie and Noah John Rondeau. Rondeau was known as the
Mayor of Cold River ( population 1 ) in the heart of the Adirondack High Peak section of
Essex County. During his days at his Cold River hermitage, Rondeau kept a diary - much of
it in code. He also wrote numerous lengthy letters and practices his own matchless brand
of poetry. Extensive selections from both are included.

"His Eminence"
|
First Person
My daughter-in-law, Natalie Leduc, recalls with great enthusiasm her day in the sun as
a "princess" at the 1950 Saranac lake Winter Carnival. His Eminence, the bishop
who crowned the king and queen of that extravaganza was no other than Noah John Rondeau --
retired Hermit of Cold River Flow!

"Hermit Rondeau"
|
During the following years the hermit was experiencing increasingly unpleasant stomach
problems that continued to become more serious. Nevertheless he managed to accept and
appear at many Adirondack Fall outings. I saw him there five or six times and never failed
to notice that he always attracted a long waiting line of people who eagerly awaited an
opportunity to greet and make an obvious fuss over the smiling, joking and neatly groomed
old codger.
